Screening

A short review on health-related quality of life, including patient reported outcomes measurements in oncology to help increase awareness in the Belgian oncological community. This review is also meant for educational purposes and to highlight the benchmarks that the work of EORTC has contributed to the field.

Dit project richt zicht tot de alleenwonende/alleenstaande kankerpatiënten, die in de loop van hun ziekteproces, nood hebben aan ondersteuning in de thuisomgeving. Het project gaat in de praktijk aan de slag met de bevindingen van Professor Reginald Deschepper (2013) op basis van het onderzoek: “Noden van alleenstaande in de thuiszorg: de visie van alleenstaande patiënten met kanker en hun zorgverleners”.

Although health policy for cancer care promotes screening of patients for emotional distress, the utility and validity of screening have been questioned. Continued research to refine detection of distress or to evaluate outcomes of screening programmes is unlikely to end this controversy. Instead, we need to identify more fundamental research questions that address the validity or utility of screening in this context.

Successful cancer treatment is defined as an increase in overall survival and/or progression-free survival. Despite their importance, these metrics omit patient quality of life. Quality-adjusted time without symptoms or toxicity (Q-TWiST) was developed to adjust survival gained, accounting for quality of life. The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the methods reported in cancer literature to determine Q-TWiST values and how these are currently translated to the clinic.

Het boek is bedoeld voor iedereen die meer wil weten over kanker, biedt basiskennis en legt op een menselijke en toegankelijke manier de verschillende facetten van kanker uit. 

Op de eerste plaats wordt uigelegd wat kanker precies is, hoe vaak de ziekte voorkomt, hoe en waarom ze in het lichaam ontstaat en hoe een tumor groeit en welke gevolgen dat heeft. Daarnaast worden ook klinische aspecten, zoals de diagnosestelling, de vooruitzichten voor de patiënt en de huidige en toekomstige behandelingsmethoden besproken. 

Communication between cancer patients and caregivers is often suboptimal. The Cancer Communication Assessment Tool for Patient and Families (CCAT-PF) is a unique tool developed to measure congruence in patient–family caregiver communication employing a dyadic approach. We aimed to examine the cross-cultural applicability of the CCAT in the Korean healthcare setting.

Sinds de oorsprong van het kankerplan in 2008 is een grondige verschuiving merkbaar in de psychosociale zorg voor de oncologische patiënt. Binnen de ziekenhuizen zijn er samenwerkingsverbanden ontstaan die de multidisciplinaire zorg opnemen. De organisatie van de psychosociale zorg is niet uniform in elk ziekenhuis, ook de invulling van de disciplines verschilt. Vragen worden gesteld bij enkele initiatieven uit het kankerplan mbt de psychosociale middelen. Vanuit enkele trends in de samenleving worden specifieke initiatieven kritisch bekeken.
