Kanker bij ouders beïnvloedt het familiesysteem. Jaarlijks krijgen in Nederland 8.000 ouders tussen de 30 en 50 jaar kanker. Het aantal kinderen dat leeft met een ouder met kanker wordt geschat op 75.000. Kanker bij ouders kan impact hebben op het gevoel van veiligheid van een kind. Daarom is 15 jaar geleden besloten de website Kankerspoken te ontwikkelen. De site is in 2010 geheel vernieuwd. In februari 2014 is er Facebookpagina bijgekomen.
